The tunnel was inaugurated by Minister for Infrastructure Development Sunil Lamsal in the presence of Japanese Ambassador Maeda Toru, senior officials from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and other dignitaries.

A commemorative plaque installed at the site bears Minister Lamsal’s name and recognizes the project as Nepal’s first modern road tunnel.

The landmark project was constructed with a concessional loan of approximately Rs 21 billion from the Government of Japan and an additional Rs 6 billion investment from the Government of Nepal.

Authorities will initially operate the tunnel under a trial phase to assess its safety systems, traffic management and overall operational readiness. During this testing period, all categories of vehicles will be allowed to use the tunnel free of charge.

Officials said toll collection will begin only after the successful completion of the trial operation and full evaluation of safety and traffic management systems.

The Nagdhunga–Sisnekhola Tunnel is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Kathmandu Valley and the southern plains, ease traffic congestion along the existing highway, improve road safety, and strengthen the country’s transport connectivity. The project is also expected to enhance trade, tourism and economic activities by providing a faster and more reliable transport corridor.
