May 9 : Nepal has expressed its serious objections over the latest unilateral act of India to open a link road to China via Nepal’s Lipulekh.
The southern neighbour yesterday (May 8) inaugurated the link road connecting it with Mansarovar of Tibet in China via the Lipulekh region that falls on the territory of Nepal.
Issuing a press release today, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) spoke against the very inauguration terming it as regrettable on the behalf of Nepal government.
“The Government of Nepal has consistently maintained that as per the Sugauli Treaty (1816), all the territories east of Kali (Mahakali) River, including Limpiyadhura, Kalapani and Lipu Lekh, belong to Nepal. This was reiterated by the Government of Nepal several times in the past and most recently through a diplomatic note addressed to the Government of India dated November 20, 2019, in response to the new political map issued by the latter,” states the MoFA.
“The latest unilateral act of India mocks the understanding reached between the two countries that a solution to boundary issues would be sought through negotiation,” the Ministry said. According to it, the government is committed to seek diplomatic solution to the boundary issues on the basis of the historical treaty, documents, facts and maps.
The Ministry also urged India to desist from carrying out any activity inside the territory of Nepal.
