The Nepalese government has tightened restrictions on garlic imports from China, citing concerns that excessive imports could be smuggled into India.
This move follows India’s strong opposition to the increasing smuggling of Chinese garlic across the border, a concern raised during bilateral trade talks last month.
Stranded Shipments at Customs
According to the Department of Customs (DoC), around 15 trucks loaded with Chinese garlic are currently awaiting clearance at the Tatopani border point. A DoC official stated that since the imported quantity is deemed sufficient to meet domestic demand, further imports have been restricted.
Official records show a sharp increase in garlic imports from China, reaching Rs 6.18 billion between mid-July 2024 and mid-January 2025. This marks a significant rise compared to Rs 877.70 million in the same period last year and Rs 518.50 million in FY 2022/23.
Importers Protest Government Restrictions
Importers have criticized the government’s decision, arguing that garlic shipments certified by China should not face additional trade barriers in Nepal. They contend that instead of restricting imports, authorities should address smuggling issues directly. Many traders have reported significant financial losses, as large consignments remain stranded at customs due to the tightened regulations.
