According to NT, for the past few days, it has been conducting a preliminary test of the advanced mobile internet service from its offices in Sundhara and Babarmahal of Kathmandu. “Following the success of the pretest, we will take it to the next phase of testing it out in other three districts apart from Kathmandu,” said Ranjit Lohiya, deputy spokesperson for NT.

The 5G is a fifth-generation mobile technology that provides an ultrafast peak data speed of 1 Gbps. Having high mobile broadband speed, the system allows downloading an Ultra HD movie within a few seconds. It also ensures high reliability in internet service.

In March 2021, the government permitted NT to carry out testing of 5G services. In the first phase, the NT has planned to conduct the testing of the advanced internet service in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Biratnagar and Nepalgunj by installing BTS towers in these locations.

Nepal currently has 4G networks that were established in January 2017. NT has received approval from the government to operate 5G with frequency of 60 MHz in 2,600 MHz bands.

Meanwhile, the NT has aimed to conduct 5G service testing in all seven provinces by the end of the current fiscal year.
