Nepal’s petroleum product imports have increased by 7.5 percent in the first 10 months of the current Fiscal Year (FY) 2024/25, with total imports reaching Rs 223 billion, according to the Department of Customs. The government collected Rs 92.51 billion in revenue from these imports.
Breakdown of Imports:
- Diesel:
- Import value: Rs 102.38 billion
- Volume: 1.147 million kiloliters
- Petrol:
- Import value: Rs 53.05 billion
- Volume: 612,012 kiloliters
- Aviation Fuel:
- Import value: Rs 16.14 billion
- Volume: 177,929 kiloliters
- LPG (Cooking Gas):
- Import value: Rs 51.81 billion
- Volume: 456.88 million kilograms
Year-on-Year Comparison:
- Diesel imports rose by 3.5% in volume compared to the same period last fiscal year.
- Petrol and aviation fuel imports each increased by 7.5%.
- LPG imports grew by 4.5%.
Despite the overall increase in value and revenue collection, diesel imports saw a slight decline in monetary value compared to last year (from Rs 115.67 billion to Rs 102.38 billion), indicating possible fluctuations in global prices or exchange rates.
The rising fuel import trend underscores Nepal’s growing energy demand and also reflects the country’s continued reliance on fossil fuels for transportation and household energy use.
