Kathmandu, December 08: The Supreme Court has issued an order, staying the construction works of Nijgadh International Airport. A single bench of Justice Tanka Bahadur Moktan issued the stay order on Friday (Dec 08).
The stay order came in response to a writ petition filed by former secretary Dwarikanath Dhungel, senior advocate Krishna Prasad Bhandari, former member of the National Planning Commission, Prabhu Budhathoki, and Bharat Basnet on behalf of Nijgadh Forest Conservation Committee on Thursday (December 07).
The court also summoned both sides for discussion before issuing an interim order on the petition. The government had forwarded the process to expedite the construction works of the second international airport at Nijgadh. Earlier too, a writ petition was filed at SC, reminding the falling of tens of thousands of trees for the construction of the airport.
To this, the division bench of Justices Ishwori Prasad Khatiwada and Bam Kumar Shrestha had ordered the government on November 11 to submit the documents including Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Report relating to the construction of the international airport at Nijgadh.
The EIA of the Nijgadh international airport to be constructed in 80 square km was approved by the Ministry of Forest and Environment in April 2018. Even the agreement with Nepal Army was made for the construction of the airport two years back. RSS
