TransNepal Freight Services has been awarded the responsibility of operating the Chobhar Dry Port, constructed at a cost of  Rs 1.5 billion. This significant development comes as the Nepal Intermodal Transport Development Committee invited tenders for the operation of the port, which was financed through a World Bank loan.

The tender process, initiated on July 25, received applications from both TransNepal and New Nepal Shipping Services Company. Following a thorough technical evaluation, only TransNepal emerged as the qualified candidate.

Ashish Gajurel, the executive director of the committee, confirmed that TransNepal would now assume control of the Chobhar Dry Port. “Since TransNepal was the sole applicant to pass the technical evaluation, it will be responsible for the port’s operation.”

TransNepal has already submitted a financial proposal, amounting to NPR 28.8 million, for the port’s operation and management over a five-year period. Gajurel explained, “The company has provided NPR 28.8 million, and all responsibilities, including maintenance, will be under their purview.” The details of the financial proposal will be disclosed soon, and an agreement with TransNepal is on the verge of finalization.

The Chobhar Dry Port commenced operations in 2078 BS. However, it has faced challenges in effective operation. The regulatory nature of the committee restricts its direct management of the port, necessitating the involvement of the private sector. Recent cargo arrivals at the port have underscored the importance of efficient management. TransNepal, with a track record of successfully operating ports in Biratnagar and in Kakarbhitta, is well-equipped for the task. The company has previously worked in collaboration with India’s All Cargo Logistics Limited.

Given its experience and expertise, the committee is confident in TransNepal’s ability to ensure the effective operation of the Chobhar port. TransNepal secured the contract for the operation and management of Biratnagar ICP in August 2020 for a five-year term, and a similar contract for Kakarbhitta was awarded in February 2021.

Mukesh Kumar Rathi serves as the Managing Director of TransNepal, while Aadarsh Henge chairs All Cargo Logistics Limited. Currently, Nepal has six operational dry ports, including Sirsiya Dry Port operated by Pristine Valley Dryport Pvt Ltd, Tatopani Trans Silk Terminal, and Bhairahawa Annapurna Terminals.
