April 5 : Workers’ unions have expressed their objections to the recent decisions of the Hotel Association Nepal (HAN) regarding the workers.
In their joint statement, the All Nepal Hotel Casino and Restaurant Workers Union, Nepal Free Hotel, Casino and Restaurant Workers Union, and Nepal Tourism and Hotel Workers Union said, ” The hotel owners recently decided to either reduce workers’ basic monthly salary by 12.5 percent or lay them off citing the the adverse impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the tourism industry. It is something that will seriously hurt the hotel employees.”
Moreover, the unions claimed HAN is trying to unilaterally enforce their decision by disregarding the willingness of the workers to move ahead in a cooperative manner.
According to them, all the member and non-member workers will to come to the streets for their rights if the HAN continues to display unilateral tendency.
Earlier, the government had appealed all the industries to provide at least 50 per cent salary to workers and secure their jobs during the critical period induced by the pandemic. However, the HAN said that it would not as per this appeal because of the financial loses faced by it due to the COVID-19 crisis.
