Inflation doubles in the country compared to the previous year. Annual point-based consumer price inflation doubles to reach 8.56 percent May-June.

Such inflation was 4.19 percent in the corresponding month of the previous year, according to NRB data.

Consumer price inflation rose from 7.87 percent in April-May to 8.56 percent in May-June.

Inflation in food and beverages group was 7.43 percent and non-food and services group inflation was 9.44 percent in the review month.

As of mid-June 2012/13, the annual point-wise average monthly inflation stood at 6.09 percent. Ghee and oil under food and beverages group increased by 22.60 per cent, dairy products and eggs by 11.22 per cent, tobacco by 9.70 per cent, alcoholic beverages by 9.68 per cent and pulses and beans by 9.13 per cent in mid-June this year.

The non-food and services group accounted for 25.79 per cent for transport, 11.64 per cent for education, 8.30 per cent for furnishing and home appliances, 8.21 per cent for entertainment and culture and 7.84 per cent for household goods.

Inflation in the Kathmandu Valley was 8.32 percent, 8.29 percent in the Terai, 9.28 percent in the hills and 8.92 percent in the mountains during the review month. Inflation in these sectors was 3.87 percent, 4.47 percent, 4.32 percent and 1.72 percent respectively in last year.
