Consumer inflation eased marginally; stands at 8.5%

The consumer price inflation stood at 8.50 percent last month, which was double of the figure during the review month last year.

The inflation rate declined marginally during mid-September and mid-October, compared to the rate of the previous month, according to ‘Current Macroeconomic and Financial Situation of Nepal’ unveiled by Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) on Wednesday. In mid-September, the country’s inflation rate was recorded at 8.64 percent.

The rise in consumer price was due to an overall increase in prices of food and beverage, non-food and services. In the review month, the average of food and beverage inflation stood at 8.05 percent while non-food and services inflation stood at 8.85 percent.

Under the food and beverage category, the prices of restaurants and hotels increased 15.91 percent while fruits became costlier by 12.06 percent.

Likewise, under the non-food and services category, the prices of transportation escalated by 21.15 percent, the largest of all. Likewise, health service and furnishing and household equipment were expensive by 10.54 percent and 9.45 percent, respectively.

Region wise, inflation in Terai was 9.42 percent, the biggest of all. Likewise, the hilly region had inflation of 8.84 percent, while it was 7.07 percent in the mountains and 6.93 percent in the Kathmandu Valley, according to the NRB report.
