Bangladesh is preparing to buy electricity from Nepal.
In a meeting with the visiting delegation of Confederation of Nepalese Industries, Minister of State for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources of Bangladesh Nasrul Hamid said that the electricity generated in Nepal will be purchased from next year.
Hamid said Bangladesh was also preparing to sign a long-term power purchase agreement with Nepal’s private sector.
“The electricity generated in Nepal is being wasted due to lack of consumption. We are short of electricity, “said Hamid.” We will buy more electricity from next year. For that, the infrastructure of the transmission line will be strengthened and construction of a dedicated line will also be started. ‘
Minister of State Nasrul also expressed his commitment to purchase 3500 MW of electricity generated and wasted in Nepal by 2026.
The door to trilateral electricity trade has been opened since India issued the Interstate Energy Trade Procedure in March 2021.
Due to a lack of market management in Nepal, 500 MW of electricity was wasted in the last rainy season. The NEA has stated that a loss of Rs 5 billion has been incurred due to this.
