The price of black cardamom in Sankhuwasabha has risen sharply this year, reaching Rs 90,000 per mann (40 kg) after a decade of decline. About ten years ago, the price for the same quantity peaked at Rs 120,000 before plummeting to Rs 25,000.
Kumar Shrestha, Chair of the Black Cardamom Entrepreneurs Federation in Sankhuwasabha, attributes the price increase to rising international demand. Last year, prices ranged from Rs 60,000 to Rs 65,000 per mann.
Another contributing factor to the price hike is a decrease in production. Black cardamom is a vital cash crop for farmers in the eastern hilly and mountainous districts, including Sankhuwasabha, with approximately 98% of the produce being exported. India remains the primary market for this commodity.
Currently, cardamom farming occupies 2,871 hectares in the district. Farmers report that many gardens feature aging plants, resulting in lower yields. Last year’s production was 940 metric tons, and a further decline is expected this year.
