The Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has filed an appeal at the Supreme Court against 17 individuals following the Special Court’s decision to acquit them in a corruption case related to financial irregularities in the Melamchi Drinking Water Supply Project.
In a press statement issued on Sunday, the anti-graft body said it has challenged the acquittal of 17 people, including Dr. Sanjaya Sharma, the then Secretary at the Ministry of Water Supply, who were cleared of corruption charges by the Special Court.
The appeal has also been lodged against Bhim Prasad Upadhyay and Gajendra Kumar Thakur, who served as chairperson of the Melamchi Drinking Water Project and secretaries at the ministry, respectively.
According to the CIAA, the appeal registered at the Supreme Court on Sunday names Bhoj Bikram Thapa—who had signed the agreement between the government and the Gen-Z movement protestors—as one of the defendants.
The CIAA had originally filed the corruption case at the Special Court in February 2024, accusing 17 individuals and entities of financial irregularities in the Melamchi Drinking Water Supply Project.
