Biratnagar, October 6: A tripartite memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed here for upgrading the Biratnagar Airport into an international standard airport.
The State-1 government, the Biratnagar Metropolitan City and the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) signed the MoU to this effect on Monday (October 5).
The airport currently hosts air flights to various parts of the country. But once it is upgraded into the international airport, such flights will be directly conducted from here to foreign destinations like India, Bangladesh, and Bhutan, as per the MoU.
As part of the airport upgradation project, the existing runway will be expanded to 3,000 metres and other infrastructures and facilities would be also constructed. Of the total cost of the project, the Government of Nepal will bear 50 per cent, the State-1 government 40 per cent and the Biratnagar Metropolitan City the remaining 10 per cent.
