Facing a resource crunch, the Government of Nepal mobilized Rs 329.99 billion in domestic loans during Fiscal Year (FY) 2024/25, according to official data.
In addition to internal borrowing, the government secured Rs 125.40 billion in external loans over the same period.
By mid-July 2025, Nepal’s total outstanding public debt had climbed to Rs 2.669 trillion. Of this, Rs 1.414 trillion was external debt, while Rs 1.268 trillion was internal debt.
Debt levels relative to the economy have also increased. In FY 2024/25, Nepal’s public debt reached 43.71 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), up from 42.71 percent in the previous fiscal year.
