Kathmandu, June 19: The five-star Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kathmandu has been shut down indefinitely. Due to the agitation of workers in the hotel, the services of the hotel had been affected for the past six days. As a result, the Hotel management sent a letter to the Nepal Stock Exchange on Tuesday (June 18) stating that all the services in the Hotel were ceased.
The workers of the Hotel had been in protest since June 13 demanding facilities and dignified environment to work. Hotel’s Public Relations Director Govinda Ram Pariyar told RSS that the hotel management chose to close its services as the workers did not agree to the management’s notice appealing them to return to work.
“The services in the hotel will resume open only the workers return to work without any conditions,” Pariyar said. According to him, more than Rs 400 million has been incurred as a loss to the hotel since the services were affected. He said that it would take six months for the hotel to become fully operative.
Trade Union’s Chairperson in the Hotel Mukti Dahal said that they were forced to protest since the hotel cut down on their facilities and caused unnecessary troubles for them during their work. There are around 400 workers working in the 280-roomed Hotel. Association of hotel entrepreneurs such as Hotel Association Nepal (HAN) has expressed its sorrow over the shutdown of the services in the Hyatt Hotel and said it was effortful to make it operative.
