July 5 : The International Labour Organization (ILO) has agreed to provide the financial assistance worth $424,310 to the Non-Resident Nepalis Association (NRNA) to fight against the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic.
The ILO and NRNA have signed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) to this effect and the non-resident Nepalis are excited and happy over the agreement, NANA president Kumar Panta said. The assistance would be used in the rescue operation of Nepali workers stranded in different countries abroad.
The ILO provided the amount to rescue COVID-19 affected the Nepali migrant workers working particularly in Malaysia, UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. President Panta shared that the amount would be utilized for the welfare of Nepali migrant workers and to assess the impact on labour market caused due to COVID-19. The NRNA is also preparing to proceed its job by establishing offices in coordination with Nepal’s diplomatic mission in those countries for the support of Nepali migrants.
The offices would provide legal support to the workers who were forcefully laid off after the COVID-19. Furthermore, the amount would also be used for the repatriation of Nepalis as well, the NRNA said.
