Authorities have stepped up market surveillance following a sharp rise in complaints of black marketing and irregularities in the sale of food and beverages as election preparations gain momentum.
The Department of Commerce Supply and Consumers’ Protection conducted inspections across the capital, targeting businesses accused of overcharging and failing to comply with regulatory standards.
During the monitoring campaign, JS General Store was fined Rs 10,000 for breaching mandatory requirements. The penalty was imposed in accordance with the Consumer Protection Act.
Altogether, 20 firms were inspected in a single day, with nine receiving formal directives to improve their services and ensure the protection of consumer rights.
The Department stated that the inspections were carried out in coordination with local representatives, consumer rights activists, and other stakeholders. It also warned that monitoring activities will continue throughout the election period to prevent unfair trade practices.
