The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) has launched its long-awaited taxpayer incentive portal, allowing consumers to upload purchase bills for a chance to win cash prizes as part of a new initiative to promote tax compliance and reduce tax evasion.
In a notice issued on Saturday, the IRD invited consumers to register original VAT or PAN invoices for eligible cash purchases made within Nepal through its newly launched portal, prize.ird.gov.np.
According to IRD Deputy Director General and Joint Secretary Janak Raj Sharma, consumers who have purchased goods or services worth more than Rs. 100 in cash since July 17 (Shrawan 1) and received an original VAT or PAN invoice are eligible to participate in the reward scheme.
Consumers who make payments through bank transfers or QR-enabled digital wallets do not need to upload their bills. Such transactions will automatically be included in the system, with the QR transaction number serving as the qualifying entry. However, the department has advised all consumers to retain their original VAT or PAN invoices, as these will be required to claim any prize.
The IRD has also urged shoppers to request official VAT or PAN bills for every purchase and report businesses that fail to issue legitimate invoices.
The department plans to announce the first batch of winners next week, covering the program’s first 15 days. If no technical issues arise, officials say the reward distribution will begin as scheduled.
Under the incentive scheme, 15 daily winners will each receive Rs. 100,000 (subject to applicable taxes) for the first 15-day cycle. In addition, one bumper prize winner will receive Rs. 1 million during the same period.
The taxpayer reward program was announced by Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle in the FY 2026/27 budget to encourage consumers to demand official bills, expand the formal economy and strengthen tax compliance. The Ministry of Finance approved the program’s operating procedures during the final week of the previous fiscal year.
According to the approved guidelines, one consumer will receive Rs. 100,000 every day, while a Rs. 1 million bumper prize will be awarded every 15 days, creating two bumper prize winners each month.
