Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has confirmed that Nepal is on track to officially graduate from the United Nations’ list of Least Developed Countries (LDCs) to a Developing Country by November 2026.
Speaking at the National Assembly on Wednesday while addressing queries related to the “Study Report on Nepal’s Graduation from LDC to Developing Country Status, 2081”, PM Oli said that the graduation process is now confirmed and irreversible.
He explained that Nepal’s journey toward graduation began as early as 2010, with a structured roadmap and regular evaluations by international agencies. Nepal has met key criteria, including a per capita income of around USD 1,400, which exceeds the minimum threshold required for LDC graduation.
The final assessment, according to Oli, was conducted during the global COVID-19 pandemic, during which Nepal’s economic resilience was particularly noted. Despite global downturns, Nepal maintained macroeconomic stability, with pre-pandemic growth rates surpassing 7 percent and steady improvements in human development indicators.
PM Oli emphasized that Nepal’s upgrade to developing country status will enhance its global image, boost investor confidence, and unlock broader development opportunities. He urged all stakeholders to remain optimistic and united in preparing for the post-graduation phase, ensuring that the transition benefits the country’s long-term progress.
