Former Finance Minister Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat has emphasized the need to resolve issues related to customs.
Speaking at the Finance Committee meeting on Sunday, he mentioned that the Ministry of Finance and the Customs Department must coordinate to address the problems observed in customs, particularly concerning agricultural goods.
He said, “It seems essential to solve the issues seen in customs. While discussing agricultural products and imports from India or signing international treaties, we often show enthusiasm. However, this enthusiasm requires careful consideration. Although we sign agreements stating customs exemptions, compliance is not ensured. Nepal has reached a situation where it must only provide exemptions for imports from other countries.”
Similarly, he stated that procedural progress regarding customs needs to be made. He remarked that Nepal should not unilaterally declare customs-free agreements without all member nations’ consent.
Likewise, Swarnim Wagle, a leader of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), pointed out that the government should be more responsible in managing customs. He highlighted that negligence in determining customs rates has led to the influence of middlemen.
Member of Parliament Gyanendra Shahi emphasized the need for the government to regulate quarantine practices and suggested incorporating this into the bill. He also mentioned that Indian customs have been causing difficulties for Nepali products.
Finance Committee Chairperson Santosh Chalise stated that discussions would be held with stakeholders from various sectors to deliberate on the bill.
