Transport entrepreneurs have voiced their concerns, stating that advance ticket bookings for the upcoming Dasain festival will not be initiated until the national highways infrastructure undergoes significant improvements.

The decision stems from the recurrent obstructions and deteriorating condition of highways across the country, which have made it impossible to ensure timely and reliable transportation for passengers.

Currently, several key highways in Nepal are undergoing expansion and repair efforts.

The Tribhuvan Highway, a major route leading out of Kathmandu, is currently under expansion, while the Muglin-Pokhara road is undergoing extensive construction work.

Unfortunately, the Chitwan-Butwal road section, which carries the highest traffic volume on the East-West highway, has deteriorated to the point of resembling a dirt road.

Transport entrepreneurs have emphasized the need for a conducive environment for smooth bus operations on highways before they can consider offering advance ticket bookings.

They have urged the government to expedite the repair of rain-damaged roads and hasten the completion of ongoing construction projects.

Bijay Swar, President of the National Federation of Transport Entrepreneurs expressed his reservations, stating, “In the current situation, it is simply not feasible to offer advance ticket sales. There is no guarantee that a bus leaving Kathmandu will reach its destination and return on time.”

He pointed out that some roads have been under construction for years without even basic graveling and pothole repair.

Swar asserted that advance ticket bookings could be possible if the government swiftly addresses highway issues.

He added, “Without prompt road repairs, vehicles will continue to operate under these challenging conditions. The government needs to take the lead in resolving this issue.”

Ram Hari Pokharel, Deputy Director General of the Road Department, reassured the public by stating that all necessary repairs would be completed before the Dasain festival.

He claimed to receive daily updates from the Road Division office and stated that repair work is progressing rapidly.

“We are actively working on repairing roads damaged during the rainy season, with our primary focus on expediting the repair process,” he stated.

He assured that if a particular stretch of road cannot be covered with blacktop within 15 days, gravel will be applied to improve its condition.

He also mentioned that measures would be taken to control dust, even on highways currently undergoing expansion.
