Kathmandu, January 30: Experts have recommended to prepare a checklist to evaluate whether or not the bills presented or to be presented at the federal parliament and parliamentary committees are inconsistent with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
At a meeting of the National Assembly Committee on Sustainable Development and Good Governance yesterday, expert duo Janak Raj Joshi and Purna Chandra Bhattarai emphasized evaluating sustainable development through law-making in coordination with inter-parliamentary committee. The committee has a spectacular role in mainstreaming the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the policy, program, budget, and appropriation to be presented by the Nepal government, Joshi said.
Parliamentary monitoring should be made effective keeping SDGs at the center, he noted. “This committee also has the role to enhance capacity of government and non-government organizations”, he noted. Committee member Bimala Poudel shared that the committee members had reached out to the state and local levels to held discussions about SDGs. She stressed that the state government should formulate plans aligning the national plan and local level in line with the state plan.
She further said, “Three is a need to make grassroots level public aware of the basics of SDGs”. Committee Chair Taradevi Bhatta informed that the committee is holding a discussion on the agendas of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). RSS
