The Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) has voiced serious concern over recent media reports alleging cases of food poisoning and the misuse of Diamox during Everest expeditions, urging authorities to conduct a thorough investigation.
In a press statement released on Friday, the association described such allegations as “unimaginable” within the expedition community, cautioning that unverified claims could harm Nepal’s reputation as a premier global mountaineering destination.
The NMA emphasized that if any unethical or inhumane practices are confirmed, strict action must be taken. It highlighted that mountain tourism is a vital pillar of Nepal’s economy, sustaining thousands of guides, entrepreneurs, and climbers.
Promoting transparency, the association encouraged climbers to report any misconduct to liaison officers or directly to relevant authorities, including the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation and the Nepal Police.
The organization also called for improved regulation and oversight of insurance and rescue operations, stressing the importance of clear and transparent procedures to prevent potential misuse.
Reaffirming Nepal’s proud mountaineering heritage, the NMA welcomed climbers for the ongoing Everest season and urged all stakeholders to maintain professionalism and uphold the highest ethical standards.
