The Sanjen Hydropower Project, located in Amachodingmo-5, Rasuwa, has successfully connected its first unit to Nepal’s national grid. This milestone was achieved on Friday evening following the completion of all technical tests, according to project sub-engineer Robin Koirala. The initial connection supplied 5 MW of electricity, marking the project’s transition to operation.
The project has a total capacity of 42.5 MW. Preparations are underway to test the remaining two units, which are expected to be integrated into the national transmission system by Sunday, according to Arpan Bahadur Singh, the company’s CEO.
Sanjen Hydropower is considered a model semi-reservoir project in Nepal. A significant feature of the project is the construction of a “peaking pond” at the dam site of the Upper Sanjen Hydropower Project, with a storage capacity of 44,000 cubic meters. This facility enables the storage of water to generate additional electricity during peak evening hours and ensures operation during emergency breakdowns.
This achievement reinforces the project’s strategic importance in enhancing Nepal’s hydropower capacity and contributing to its energy stability.
