A total of 497 electric jeeps, cars, and vans worth Rs 1.48 billion were imported through the Birgunj Customs Office during the first seven months of the current fiscal year.
According to customs data, these imports generated Rs 963.6 million in revenue. This marks a sharp increase compared to the same period last fiscal year, when only 165 electric vehicles worth Rs 430.1 million were imported, contributing Rs 355 million in revenue.
Information officer Uday Singh Bista noted that electric vehicle imports have risen significantly year-on-year, reflecting growing demand and adoption.
The upward trend is also visible in the two-wheeler segment. A total of 4,128 electric motorcycles worth Rs 805.7 million were imported during the review period, compared to 3,374 units worth Rs 440.3 million in the same period last year.
Meanwhile, imports of fuel-powered vehicles have declined. During the current fiscal year, 609 fuel-based jeeps, cars, and vans worth Rs 1.16 billion were imported, generating Rs 2.86 billion in revenue. In contrast, the previous fiscal year saw 748 such vehicles imported, worth Rs 1.5 billion and generating Rs 3.73 billion in revenue.
Overall, the customs point recorded imports of vehicles and auto parts worth Rs 23.57 billion in the first seven months of the current fiscal year. This is a notable rise from Rs 17.15 billion recorded during the same period last year, which had generated Rs 13.26 billion in revenue.
