Festival-Time Relief for Consumers

Joint Operation by FMTCL and STC

According to the decision of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies (MoICS) on August 24, the Food Management and Trading Company Limited (FMTCL) and the Salt Trading Corporation (STC) will run the subsidised shops.

Shivram Pokhrel, Head of the Supply Management and Consumer Interest Protection Division at the Ministry, confirmed that a circular has been issued to both corporations for the operation of these shops.

Discounts and Locations

  • FMTCL will provide a discount of Rs 5 per kilogram on rice, lentils, wheat, sugar, and other goods. It will operate fair-price shops in 46 districts.
  • STC will set up 15 outlets in the Kathmandu Valley, including three mobile shops. Beyond the Valley, it will also operate in various districts.

The discounts offered by STC include:

  • Rs 2 per kilogram on salt
  • Rs 5 per kilogram on sugar
  • Rs 7 per litre on oil
  • Rs 7 per kilogram on beaten rice, pulses, flour, and maize

Consumer-Centered Initiative

The MoICS stated that the initiative is aimed at making essential food and consumable items more affordable, thereby safeguarding the interests of general consumers during the festival season.
